Reform in California
California Health Reform and Me
Reform and Me
In this 50 sec video, we want to quickly break down how California health reform
will affect most Californians. Further detail is available below but
start with the video!
There are three main Groups
1. People with Grandfathered Plans.
These are plans which have not changed
materially (upgrade, downgrade, change carrier,
plan, etc) since 3/22/2010. These
plans are not subject to most of the new
mandates and should be priced much better than
the new Reform plans effective Jan 1st.
Adding or removing family members is generally
There are some exceptions. If
you had a very high rate due to increased tiers,
expensive older plans, HIPAA or Cobra coverage,
etc, OR if you can qualify
for a Health Subsidy (next section), it might
make sense to move. You will be able to
see actual rates and benefits with and without
subsidies through our
California Health Exchange Quote page
starting October 1st, 2013.
2. People That Make Under 400% of
the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)

additional family member. The health
subsidies can be very large...$1000's of dollars
per year. This will likely outweigh any
3. People That Make Over 400% of the
Federal Poverty Level
These people will likely see their health
insurance premiums increase by 30-60% depending
on existing plan, age, and area. This is
going to be tough. There is a penalty for
not purchasing California health insurance
starting Jan 1st, 2014. These people
really need to be proactive and use our online
Quoting Tool to see all available options.
So What Can You Do?
Until we hit Jan 1st, 2014. Make
sure you're on the best health plan at the best
