Anthem Blue Cross of California is one of the top 2-3 carriers consistently on the California health insurance market so it's important to understand their plan selection.
A good majority of new application are for Anthem's Individual Family and Small Group plans so they're doing something right. Let's look at their current plan options and focus on the best values. We'll also look at what changed from them with Health Reform's Jan 1st, 2014 introduction.
The market has definitely turned against HMO plans due to their cost and this is equally true for Anthem on the individual family side. As for the Group side, they were never the strongest HMO carrier but still offer a range adequately priced options there.
Let's first look at the individual family market for Anthem Blue Cross of California.
Anthem has been a dominant carrier since the ACA law went into effect Jan 1st, 2014. They have captured 1/3rd of the enrollment with Blue Shield and Kaiser following.
Their network is slightly smaller with the new ACA plans compared to prior Grandfathered or Small Business plans.
Small Group is also a viable market for Anthem, especially on the PPO front. If you want all or mainly HMO plans for your group, Anthem Blue Cross of California might not be the best priced plans.
There are other carriers that focus on HMO plans. If, however, you will include PPO options (we'll discuss in a second) or only have PPO plans, Anthem is one of the top 2-3 options. Keep in mind that HSA plans are generally PPO in terms of network. Anthem Blue Cross of California was one of the first carriers to offer the ability to offer any plan to each employee.
This was revolutionary at the time and has since been copied by most other major carriers. The employer can fix a contribution based on a dollar amount or a percentage of a plan.
