There has been a wholesale move away from HMO plans towards PPO plans on the California health insurance market and no carrier has embraced this more than Health Net of California. Traditionally, Health Net of California was primarily an HMO carrier but as they saw the writing on the wall in the mid 2000's, they quickly adapted to the new direction of PPO based plans and aggressively joined the party. What has resulted is a strong and competitive alternative to the two Blue's which is always a welcomed event for our California health insurance market.
We're always skeptical of a carrier until they have proved themselves for at least five years in any segment of the market. That's usually the time it takes for a carrier who is not truly committed to the tumultuous California health insurance market to make their departure. Health Net of California has clearly surpassed that with their PPO plans and they've always been strong on the HMO side. In fact...
Their PPO portfolio of plans has gone through a few revisions but are currently poised to attract quite a bit of the market share due to their pricing and benefit profile.
On the California small group side, they also offer the "cafeteria" flexibility availability of many plans (HMO, PPO, and HSA) that other carriers offer. For groups where there's a fair percentage of the employees choosing HMO plans, Health Net becomes a well-priced option due to their strength in that category and their PPO's are also competitive for a comprehensive group offering.
The Medicare supplement offering is also becoming a steady competitor in the market. Let's take a look at their current plan make-up and look for where they excel.
Health Net has firmly staked a claim in the new Exchange marketplace by offering HMO's, PPO's, and EPO's in the Covered California Individual and Family market. Their HMO plans can be significantly less expensive than competitors especially in the great Los Angeles area.
On the Small Group side, they generally fall in the top 3 for pricing to benefit and their provider network is on par with the other two that price well. Their HMO's are very competitive and offer a large array of benefit options. For mid to high level PPO price points, they are competitive as well. On the Medigap front, since Medicare supplement plans are standardized by Medicare (an F plan is an F plan regardless of the carrier), it's really a question of cost but Health Net's Medigap pricing has been pretty stable which is a key concern since you're potentially making a decision for decades.
