Pacificare was a powerhouse in the Medicare Advantage market with their Secured Horizens brand.  This entire company was absorbed by United Health.

Well priced for HMO type plans

Well established California carrier with partnerships depending on market

Pacificare of California has been one of the top 5-6 carriers in California for decades now.

Originally, Pacificare was an HMO carrier when that type of plan took over the market in the 80's.

As HMO's faced more pricing pressure (particularly on the Individual and Family Market side), Pacificare then pushed into PPO health plans as well.

Pacificare on the Individual and Family market

Pacificare is not participating in the individual/family market.  United is also not in the individual/family market (on or off exchange).

On the Group health insurance market in California, Pacificare is still very strong in terms of pricing and benefits and they have partnered with United Health for a full suite offering of PPO and HSA plans while they concentrate on their traditional strong suit of HMO plans.
